With opening chapters that are largely autobiographical, Nancy Mitford’s 1945 novel follows the romantic life of Linda Radlett. Narrated by her cousin it tells of her marriages – to a politician of whom her family disapproved and then to a humourless communist – and the chance she took to finally find happiness with a French duke.
