More specifically, the book presents a multifaceted study of the European writers and philosophers, among them: Euripides, Ovid, Boethius, Dante, Shakespeare, James Joyce and Marijan, one of the first Georgian female poets, offering the insight into the reception-adaptation approach and their interpretation in Mariam Aleksidze’s contemporary Georgian ballet and choreography of 2016-2024 performances, namely: Shakespeare: Love, Metamorphoses, Marijan’s Room, Lucia’s Room, 12 Visits, Beatrice and Medea. The Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet dancers will perform fragment from Mariam Aleksidze’s performances as part of the book presentation.

Vazha became more than just another poet great enough to be known by his first name alone. Heroes in his poems are not just self-personifications. Aluda Ketelauri (1888) introduces the theme of conflict between individual morality and the commune’s imperative. His poetry reached a zenith with Host and Guest (1893), where the clash between laws of blood feud and laws of hospitality drives the protagonists to isolation and death. In the 1970s, Aluda Ketelauri, Host and Guest, and The Snake-Eater were merged into one stark and terrifying Symbolist film by Tengiz Abuladze, Invocation.

The book includes three epic poems and nine shorter lyrics by the poet translated by Donald Rayfield OBE. The shorter poems are published in English for the first time. The book contains specially commissioned works by the writer Ana Kordzaia-Samadashvili, the fashion designer Manana Antelidze, and the artist Leonid Semeiko, which are published together with Andro Semeiko’s artworks. The book is the most comprehensive publication to date of Vazha Pshavela’s poems in English. The selection of the poems in the book illustrates the development of the poet’s humanist ideas and approach to nature that are relevant to ecology and social democracy in the world today. They are accompanied by an introduction by Donald Rayfield, which, together with the works by the others involved, offers several angles for a vision of the poet’s work – bridging his ideas with the present time.
