The Democratic Republic of Georgia was strangled in its crib. Just four days after the constitution was ratified, the capital fell to the Red Army. Soviet scholars were forbidden to research this Georgian story, and Western scholars had little interest in a small and peripheral state that was independent for only three years. This book is a reflective journey by Irakli Laitadze into the recent past. The author is a witness of the events that laid the foundation of the Soviet Union’s essential qualities—absurdity, deceit, and cruelty. He explores and ponders the policies of the totalitarian regime, its oppressive reforms, and methods of human destruction. Drawing on his personal experiences, Irakli Laitadze depicts the monstrous force that removed individuals further from civilization.

Yet, a few episodes highlight moments of light—instances where glimpses of humanity briefly shone amidst the darkness. For those who lived through these times, the memories will resurface vividly and some of them might re-evaluate the present, which is inevitably formed by the past.
